Transfer from Ministry Hacker: Freedom

The internet distracts us.  The temptation to log on to our favorite websites, the dinging of new e-mails every few minutes and a host of other distractions often pull us away from what we are trying to do.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could just shut the internet off for a few hours to get some real work done?

Short of pulling the power cord on the router, is there a way to do this?

There is a computer program called "Freedom" (Mac and PC versions available).  It allows you to lock yourself out of an internet connection for a specified period of time.

All you do is put in how much time you want to be locked out of the internet, and press OK:

The cool thing is that this still allows you to print to a wireless printer (at least on the Mac version).

When the time is up, it lets you know that the internet is available again and asks you if you would like to reset the timer.  If you're like me, you'll want to keep resetting it because of how much more work gets done with no internet access.

Understand that once it is on, you cannot shut it off*--so be careful if you have time sensitive activities that require an internet connection.

The app costs $10, but is well worth the price.  I have not had any issues with it.  It works just as advertised on my Mac.

Here is the link to their site

*You may be able to shut it off by shutting the computer down and restarting, but I have not tried.
