Preachers and teachers always have something more they can learn
about their craft. Especially for those of us who are fledgling
teachers without experience or professional training in education, we
can always use help.
I recently read a book called "Effectively Teaching Adult Bible Class" by a brother, Charles Willis. This book was recommended at Polishing the Pulpit '12 by Rick Brumback (Southwest School of Preaching). I think it is a must-read for those who want to improve the quality of adult Bible classes at the local congregation.
The main thrust of the book is a plea to migrate from "lecture" format in Bible class to a "discussion" format. Unfortunately, the "discussion" format has been horribly abused as of late at many congregations, leading to watered-down, lazy and unprofitable Bible studies. This is not the type of discussion Mr. Willis' has in mind. The idea is to foster "self-discovery" on the part of the student so they learn the material on their own (cf. Fishers of Men methodology). The teacher still does lecture, but also acts largely as a moderator of discussion.
I will briefly outline the Table of Contents here...
Chapter 1 - Creating an Environment of Discussion
Chapter 2 - Fielding Unexpected Questions
Chapter 3 - Benefits of Introductory Reviewing
Chapter 4 - Preparing and Using Notes
Chapter 5 - Raising Your Expectations
Chapter 6 - Developing the Habits of a Teacher
Chapter 7 - Planning an Adult Curriculum
Chapter 8 - Creating Original Materials
Chapter 9 - Practical Tips
The book is intensely practical and I believe will help novice and veteran Bible teachers alike. You can purchase it on Amazon here (lowest price as of the time of this post: $4.91):
